EXPERTS RAISE ALARM OVER RISING CASES OF CHRONIC DISEASES
No. 1: The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has revealed
that high blood pressure remains number one killer disease in Nigeria,
accounting for about 52 per cent cause of sudden deaths in the country. In a
related report by the World Health Organization’s Global status report on
noncommunicable diseases, about 46% of Nigerian adults aged 25 and above are
suffering from hypertension. Hypertension is a silent killer because it usually
comes with no early symptoms. By 2020 it is estimated that high blood
pressure/hypertension will contribute to about 83 per cent of sudden death
cases occurring in developing countries.
No. 2: According to the WHO’s global report, about 422 Million
adults have diabetes with 1.6 million deaths directly attributed to diabetes
each year. The Nigeria Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has raised
the alarm over high prevalence of diabetes among Nigerians, disclosing that the
country constitute a quarter of 15 million cases of diabetes in Africa.
Speaking in Lagos at the 2017 SANOFI Diabetes Summit, Adewole,
said the disease had been a major cause of end stage renal disease and one of
the commonest causes of blindness and also shortens an individual’s lifespan.
He noted that while 80 percent of its victims die of cardiovascular
complications ranging from stroke, myocardial infarction and kidney failure to
foot gangrene, one in every 11 adults had diabetes and up to half of these were
not diagnosed.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had predicted that diabetes
will become the seventh leading cause of death by 2030. Nigeria lost over
40,000 people to diabetes in 2017 says a publication of the International
Diabetes Federation (IDF).
No. 3: Statistics has revealed that 150,000 Nigerians die annually
as a result of heart-related diseases and alarmingly, the number is expected to
increase to 23 million by the year 2030 if adequate measures are not taken.
(Thisday, October 5, 2017).
No. 4: Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole,
disclosed that about 20 million Nigerians have hepatitis. He explained that
though many people may appear healthy physically, they could be walking around
without knowing they are carriers, adding that most times the disease does not
manifest until it is late.
No. 5: The Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN) revealed that
about 25m Nigerians have kidney failure. They also revealed that about 18, 000
of them need Dialysis yearly at about N400,000 monthly.
Does these statistics give you any concern? Less than 10% of all
the people suffering from chronic diseases eventually get cured with over 90%
likely to die. The reasons are:
1.
No
prescription drug can permanently cure any chronic disease, they only help in
managing the symptoms without addressing the root cause
2.
According to
Dr Kingsley Akinroye, executive director of the Nigerian Heart Foundation, our health
system offers diagnosis and treatment only to those who can pay for it. He further
observed that even when people do go for a medical check-up, diagnosis of such
chronic conditions can be unreliable at primary health level.
3.
Ignorance is
also a very big issue here. The problems is made worse when people are not
aware of the necessity for – or unable to afford – regular medical checks.
Nigeria is facing a grave health crisis especially with the
deteriorating economic condition of the nation. A recent statistics poll by
Louis Harris shows that over 96% of all the people who do not sleep well at
night are either worried about their health or finances.
