EXPERTS RAISE ALARM OVER RISING CASES OF CHRONIC DISEASES

No. 1: The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has revealed that high blood pressure remains number one killer disease in Nigeria, accounting for about 52 per cent cause of sudden deaths in the country. In a related report by the World Health Organization’s Global status report on noncommunicable diseases, about 46% of Nigerian adults aged 25 and above are suffering from hypertension. Hypertension is a silent killer because it usually comes with no early symptoms. By 2020 it is estimated that high blood pressure/hypertension will contribute to about 83 per cent of sudden death cases occurring in developing countries.
